The key objective of the Flow-Based Market Coupling (FBMC) mechanism is to optimize the day-ahead European electricity market for 13 countries from the so-called Core capacity calculation region (Core CCR): Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czechia, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. The additional aims of FBMC are to enhance the operation security of electricity grids and to enable the control and coordination of transit flows in the entire Core region.
The FBMC is based on an algorithm matching offers and bids for electricity made on exchanges in different countries and thus allows for their enhanced integration. First contracted electricity that was facilitated by the algorithm was delivered on June 9, 2022.
Since 8 June 2022, the FBMC has been linking the cross-border transmission activities of 16 European Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and 10 Nominated Electricity Market Operators (NEMOs).
