The rapid build-out of AI-driven data centers is imposing on some electricity systems a set of regulatory challenges that are novel not so much in their individual technical content as in the speed with which they materialise simultaneously.

Energy regulation, designed to govern systems that are relatively stable and predictable, is now required to respond to large loads that in some countries grow with 2-digits rates, may introduce risks for system stability if not well considered by System Operators and above all may generate pressures on prices and ultimately on affordability, in particular due to capacity mechanisms.

The workshop's aim is not a descriptive survey but a structured comparison of regulatory experiences — European, North American, Australian — each bringing concrete elements of implementation of the regulatory dimensions presented in the theoretical framework at the beginning of the workshop, so that participants leave with a shared map of the problems and the responses available.

    Agenda

    • Session 1 | AI and Power Systems: Setting The Framework

    • Session 2 |: Operational Reliability – Risks Induced By Large Loads

    • Session 3 | National Experiences
